Qualification:
------------

69 teams from the 56 CAF member countries qualify for the competition.
The countries are ranked according to their performance in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup in the 5 seasons from 2012 to 2016 and a CAF 5-Year Ranking is compiled.
- 2 teams each from the countries, placed 1-12 in the CAF 5-Year Ranking (Egypt, Tunisia, Congo DR, Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Zambia, Congo, Mali and Nigeria);
- 1 team each from the remaining 44 countries;
- the previous season's CAF Confederation Cup winner (if it hasn't qualified for the CAF Champions League).

54 teams enter the competition (14 federations do not enter a team).

The participating teams are ranked according to their performance in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup in the 5 seasons from 2013 to 2017 and a CAF 5-Year Team Ranking is compiled.
The top 10 teams in the CAF 5-Year Team Ranking enter the competition directly at the 1st Round.


1st Phase:
------------

Format:
54 teams and 16 teams from the CAF Champions League contest 16 places in the Group stage in a knockout format.

Preliminary Round:
44 teams are drawn into 22 pairs.
Winners are decided over two legs.
Hosting is determined by the draw.

1st Round:
22 teams from the Preliminary Round and the 10 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 16 pairs.
Teams are allocated into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: the 10 teams that enter the competition at this stage;
Pot 2: the 22 winners from the Preliminary Round.
Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2 until Pot 1 is emptied.
The remaining Pot 2 teams are drawn against each other.
Winners are decided over two legs.
Hosting is determined by the draw.

Play-offs:
16 teams from the 1st Round and 16 losers from CAF Champions League 1st Round are drawn into 16 pairs.
Teams are distributed into 2 pots, as follows:
Pot 1: the 16 2nd Round winners;
Pot 2: the 16 CAF Champions League 1st Round losers.
Each pair consists of one team each from Pot 1 and Pot 2.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The Pot 1 teams host the second legs.

Tie-breakers for the knockout matches over two legs:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. penalties.

Qualification for the Group stage:

Group stage:
------------

Format:
16 teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each (Groups A-D).
Teams are seeded into 2 pots, based on the CAF individual team 5-Year ranking:
Pot 1: the 4 teams with the highest ranking;
Pot 2: the 12 remaining teams.
Each group consists of 1 team from Pot 1 and 3 teams from Pot 2.
Each team plays the others from its own group twice - home and away - for a total of 6 games each, over 6 game weeks.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. points in head-to-head matches; 3. goal difference in hth matches; 4. away goals in hth matches; 5. total goal difference; 6. total goals scored.

Qualification for the Knockout stage:
1-2 place of each group: qualify for the Knockout stage


Knockout stage:
------------

Format:
8 teams contest the CAF Confederation Cup winner in a knockout format.

Quarter-finals:
8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.
Teams are distributed into 2 pots:
Pot 1: the 4 group winners;
Pot 2: the 4 group runners-up.
Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The group winners host the second legs.

Semi-finals:
4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.
Winners are decided over two legs.
Hosting is determined by draw.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming CAF Confederation Cup winner.
Winner is decided over two legs.
Hosting is determined by the draw.

Tie-breakers for the knockout matches over two legs:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. penalties.

Qualification for CAF competitions:
winner: CAF Super Cup
