Thurston rules out retirement U-turn

16 agosto 2018 10:10

Johnathan Thurston has no intention of reversing his decision to retire at the end of the NRL season despite the North Queensland Cowboys sitting bottom of the ladder with three games remaining.

Thurston announced in 2016 that he would step away from the game at the end of his current contract with the Cowboys, but his swansong has not gone to plan.

The Cowboys finished the 2017 campaign as runners-up to Melbourne Storm, a 34-6 thrashing denying Thurston a second title with the Townsville outfit.

However, things have been very different this season with the Cowboys only winning six of their 21 games, collecting 14 points.

With the end in sight some had questioned whether Thurston would play on to try and finish on a high, but he insists his decision is final.

"I'm satisfied and content with the decision," he told reporters. "There are only a few games to go, hopefully we can cause a few upsets."

Two wins from their last three matches have given the Cowboys hope of avoiding the wooden spoon, but crucial matches against fellow strugglers Paramatta Eels and Gold Coast Titans await.

Thurston is confident they can end on a high, having been impressed with their recent run of form.

He added: "It has been a lot more enjoyable when on right side of scoreboard!

"I think we are playing a good brand of footy in the last couple of weeks and that gives the team confidence moving forward."
