McDavid OT winner sends Canada into quarters

14 maio 2018 23:45

Connor McDavid scored an overtime winner to clinch Canada's place in the Ice Hockey World Championships quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Latvia.

Canada have struggled for consistency in the tournament and went into Monday's fixture on the back of a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Finland.

They were pushed to overtime after Latvia's Kristians Rubins cancelled out Anthony Beauvillier's opener.

But Edmonton Oilers star McDavid ensured they will be in the last eight, showing great skill to fire in the rebound from his own effort with the puck in mid-air.

Latvia now face a nervy final encounter with hosts Denmark to decide who will take the final spot in the knock-outs from Group B.

In Group A, Russia and Czech Republic were already sure of progression but claimed victories in contrasting manners.

Goals from Maxim Mamin, Nikita Gusev, Maxim Shalunov and Ilya Mikheyev gave 27-time champions Russia a 4-0 win over Slovakia, while Czech Republic survived a late surge from Austria to claim a 4-3 triumph.

The other game in Group B saw Norway end their campaign with a 3-0 win over South Korea, who have been relegated to World Championship Division I after a campaign in which they did not pick up a point.
