Thomas planning long stay at number one

Justin Thomas is determined to remain world number one for a "really, really long time" after dethroning Dustin Johnson.

An 11th-placed finish at the Players Championship was enough for Thomas to claim top spot in the rankings for the first time.

Johnson had held that status for 64 weeks, but slipped to second after finishing in a share of 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

Thomas is eager to ensure he stays at the top of the pile for the long haul.

The 2017 US PGA Championship winner said: "It's important, but it's not something where it's like I just want to do it once. I want to do it for a really, really long time."

He added: "I would much rather shoot 10 under on the weekend and earn it as opposed to missing the cut and have DJ not play well."

Thomas finished with his best round of the week in Florida, shooting a six-under 66 to finish 11 under.

He said: "I love this golf course, I always have; I've always said that. There's something about it.

"It's so exciting to go play because I truly feel like you can shoot nine, 10, 11 under, you really can, just because of the length of the golf course and if you're driving it well and how good the greens are."
