New York Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray has been terrible his last two starts and he is desperate to turn his form around.
With 11 runs allowed in 4.1 innings pitched, Gray is in a rut unlike any he has been in his career.
However, he is not letting that affect his mindset for his start on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.
"I had two bad starts. It's not a secret," Gray said, via the NY Daily News.
"But at the end of the day I get a chance to go out and compete tomorrow. I get a chance to go out there and try to win a baseball game, and that's what I'm going to try to do."
Gray noted he has had rough stretches before, including the beginning of 2017 which arguably paved the way for his trade to the Yankees. Through his first 10 starts with the A's in 2017, Gray posted a 4.84 ERA, and he did so in a ballpark much kinder to pitchers than Yankee Stadium.
He turned it around after that, finishing the season with a 3.55 ERA in 27 starts.
However, Gray has never seen a rut like the one he is currently in. The 11 runs allowed in 4.1 innings is the most he has ever allowed in such a short stretch. Only once in his career has he given up more runs in back-to-back starts. He gave up 14 in 10.2 innings in two starts in May 2016.
He bounced back the next month, posting 3.23 ERA in his next five starts across 30.2 innings. Gray has taken his lumps and he knows how to deal with them. He is hoping that will carry over to his current funk.
"I'm not going to walk around with my head down," he said. "I'm going to walk around with my head up high and I'm going to figure it out. And I mean that's just kind of how I go about things, not only baseball but things in life. And I'm going to keep working until I figure it out, and that's kind of how I approach it."
