Cleveland Indians pitcher Andrew Miller has struggled since returning from a hamstring strain in late April and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of the uncharacteristically bad All-Star reliever.
The Indians suffered a 9-8 loss to the Tigers as Miller struggled to contain Detroit on Tuesday.
Miller entered in the seventh inning after fellow reliever Dan Otero allowed two runs to score.
Cleveland were still ahead by two runs but the lead quickly vanished as Miller retired only one of the six batters he faced.
Detroit's JaCoby Jones and Pete Kozma rattled Miller with back-to-back RBI doubles and the Tigers loaded the bases after in the Indians pitcher walked three consecutive hitters.
Miller fired 10 scoreless innings to begin the season before the injury and does not quite look the same as Cleveland's bullpen continue to struggle as a whole.
The Indians saw all 10 batters reach base, highlighted by Brandon Guyer's grand slam but fell to one game below .500.
LYLES HAUNTS FORMER TEAM
San Diego Padres starter Jordan Lyles took it to his former team, striking out 10 Colorado Rockies batters over 7.3 scoreless innings in a 4-0 win. Lyles carried a perfect game into the top of the eighth before allowing a one-out single to Trevor Story.
Minnesota Twins hurler Jose Berrios also lasted 7.3 innings with 10 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory against the St Louis Cardinals.
New York Mets' Juan Lagares went four for five with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base in a 12-2 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.
CARPENTER STRUGGLES TO IGNITE TWINS
Matt Carpenter's woes at the plate continued against the Twins as the infielder went 0 for four with two strikeouts as his average fell to .140 on the season. Carpenter has not recorded a hit since May 5.
Chicago White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez allowed six runs in just two-plus innings of work in a 7-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lopez did not record a strikeout as his K:BB ratio blossomed to 31:21 on the year.
PISCOTTY HONOURS MOTHER WITH HOMER
In his first at-bat since re-joining the Oakland Athletics after his mother's funeral, Stephen Piscotty hit a home run in a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Gretchen Piscotty died earlier this month at the age of 55 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
San Diego Padres 4-0 Colorado Rockies
Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 Chicago White Sox
Miami Marlins 4-2 Los Angeles Dodgers
Detroit Tigers 9-8 Cleveland Indians
New York Mets 12-2 Toronto Blue Jays
Oakland Athletics 5-3 Boston Red Sox
Chicago Cubs 3-2 Atlanta Braves
Minnesota Twins 4-1 St Louis Cardinals
Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 Kansas City Royals
Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 Milwaukee Brewers
San Francisco Giants 5-3 Cincinnati Reds
Houston Astros 5-3 Los Angeles Angels
Seattle Mariners 9-8 Texas Rangers
Washington Nationals-New York Yankees (postponed)
Baltimore Orioles-Philadelphia Phillies (postponed)
DODGERS AT MARLINS
Justin Turner is back in the Dodgers line-up and will look to feast on Caleb Smith (2-4, 3.63 ERA) and Miami relievers on Wednesday. Walker Buehler (2-1, 1.64) toes the rubber for Los Angeles, who would be level alongside the Marlins with another loss.
